Valeria Ossio (M.Des 2010) gave an insight into her work as a service designer with Skills Development Scotland (SDS). Valeria started work with SDS in March this year, and we think it is the first job described as ‘service designer’ in Scotland.
Valeria gave a background to the work Skills Development Scotland do to support young people into work. Valeria has recently been working on the My World of Work: Parent Zone. The research suggested that parents from economically disadvantaged backgrounds were less likely to communicate with their children about their future career choices. Parents were interested in getting concrete information about how to apply for jobs rather than superficial information about companies aspirations. Valeria and her team developed an experience ‘probe’ that parents completed to show how they would most like to access information about applying for jobs.
Valeria talked about the research and prototyping process and the challenges of communicating ideas within a team and the power of visualisation.
