The Vanguard Method is a proprietary system developed by Professor John Seddon, as a counterpoint to the Toyota Lean Manufacturing methodology which has been introduced somewhat evangelically in the public and private sector. Seddon proposes that methods developed for manufacturing systems do not easily translate into people-based systems. The language and approach of the method is closer to service design thinking than traditional management approaches: how do things work at the moment and what interventions would make things better – it’s how good design works. Good introductory video here. And the site allows access to a lot of good case studies.
